Complex and interesting questions are often raised at the interface of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics about the essence of humanity, spirituality, and corporate social responsibility. An example of such controversy can be found in the intense debate raised by such emerging and controversial concepts as robotic slavery and robots’ rights. As we push the frontiers of Artificial Intelligence, creation of robots with human-like intelligence and an ability to display social behaviors, learning capabilities, and adaptation to the environment is just a matter of time. The purpose of this debate is to explore the potential existence and resolution of ethical dilemmas in a society where the line between man and machine becomes increasingly thin and perhaps tenuous.
The topic for the debate contest is:
Resolved that: Intelligent robots impose an ethical burden on society far too greater than any benefits that they can be expected to provide
Contestants are required to take one of the two positions [For or Against the resolution] on the topic and present their arguments in support of the position they have taken as clearly, thoroughly, and systematically as possible.
