Visa assistance
Authorization for temporary stay (in Dutch: Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf,
or MVV)
If you will be staying for longer than three months, you might need an
‘authorization for temporary stay’ (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf, or MVV).
This requirement does not apply to citizens of EU/EEA member states, the USA,
Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Switzerland or Monaco. The regular
application procedure for an MVV may take three to six months, sometimes even
longer. Hanze University Groningen can apply for an MVV on your behalf using a
fast-track procedure. But to do this, our institution must give the authorities
a guarantee, which we sign on your behalf. If Hanze University Groningen applies
for your visa, this will be done under specified conditions only.
For your residence permit and your visa application, you will need to prove that you have sufficient funds, by providing a financial guarantee. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Services have guidelines on how much money a foreign student should have available for his/her studies in The Netherlands. Currently, the amount is set at Euro 694.04 per month. If Hanze University Groningen applies for your visa for you, you are required to transfer the financial guarantee to our bank account. The amount we require from you differs per study programme. We require the following financial guarantee per application since the financial guarantee has to cover at least the tuition fees for your programme. Summing up:
Bachelor:
Euro 8,400
Preparatory Course:
Euro 8,400
Master MAIB:
Euro 12,000
Master MBA:
Euro 14,000
Exchange (5 months)
Euro 3,500
Exchange (10 months)
Euro 7,000
Upon receipt of your financial guarantee, the International Student Office will apply for your visa, which you will be able to pick up at the Dutch Embassy in your home country. From your deposit the International Student Office will pay your tuition fee (varies per programme), insurance (Euro 441.50), your Housing Office mediation fee (Euro 55) and your housing deposit (Euro 300). The balance of your guarantee will be transferred to you as soon as you have opened a Dutch bank account.
Additional funds
As you may have noticed, the balance you will receive on your bank account in The Netherlands will not be enough to live off in The Netherlands. We only require you to transfer the minimum necessary funds. You should therefore take into account that you need to bring additional funds with you. Also be aware that you will not have access to the balance of your guarantee until you have opened a bank account and the university has transferred your money.
Cost of Living
Experience shows that to live in the Netherlands for one year costs a foreign student between €700 and €900 a month. This is needed to cover daily expenses and to pay the registration and tuition fees. You cannot rely on finding a source of additional income after you arrive. Your opportunities for finding work are restricted.
